Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Frequent clenching and grinding of teeth is what is known as bruxism.

This often happens during the night when sleeping. Unless your partner mentions they hear you, you may not even be aware this is an issue. However, the symptoms may already be prevalent and can lead to permanent damage. Bruxism can cause many complications over the years:

Wear down tooth enamel
Break fillings or other dental work
Worsening of TMJ dysfunction
Jaw pain, toothache, headaches, or earaches
Tooth sensitivity
Tooth mobility
Chipped teeth
Erodes gums and supporting bones, contributing to gum disease

While there is no cure for bruxism, the condition can be managed.

Mouthguards
The most common solution to help to alleviate pain and discomfort is a mouth guard. A mouth guard is a removable plastic appliance, primarily worn at night, to prevent the damaging effects of bruxism.

There Are Three Types of Mouthguards

CUSTOM-FITTED: The best mouth guard is one that has been custom made for you by Petaluma Family Dentistry. Give us a call to learn more.

STOCK: There are stock mouth guards on the market which come pre-formed and ready to wear, but these bulky appliances make breathing and speaking difficult.

BOIL AND BITE: There is also a “boil and bite” option, which utilizes boiling water to soften the plastic guards in order for them to be shaped to better fit your mouth. The best mouth guard, however, is one that has been custom made for you by Petaluma Family Dentistry. Give us a call to learn more.

The best mouthguard is one that has been custom made for your mouth by your dentist. However, if you can't afford a custom-fitted mouthguard, you should still wear a stock mouthguard or a boil-and-bite mouthguard from the drugstore.
