Sedation Dentistry at Petaluma Family Dentistry
Dental visits can be a source of anxiety for many of our patients. At Petaluma Family Dentistry, we understand how crippling that anxiety can be and are prepared to help.
Dr. Navid provides you with the necessary means to ensure you receive comprehensive dental care. Our office offers options for sedation dentistry, providing patients with oral sedation or nitrous oxide inhalation.
Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is administered through a mask placed over your nose. Within a matter of moments, you will feel the calming sedative effects of the gas, although you will still be conscious and able to respond to requests and directions.
The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly once the mask is removed. This method is most effective for patients with mild to moderate anxiety.
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is most often used for patients who are mildly or moderately anxious or nervous. It eases their fears so that they can relax and receive treatment comfortably and safely.
Nitrous oxide is administered by placing a small mask over your patient's nose. As the gas begins to work, the patient becomes calm, although he or she is still awake and can talk. When the gas is turned off, the effects of sedation wear off almost immediately.
Patients who are more anxious may need an oral medication with stronger effects than nitrous oxide. With oral sedatives, you will feel very sedated and sleepy, but can still be roused if necessary to respond to directions. As side effects can include nausea or vomiting, Dr. Navid provides instructions about eating and drinking prior to your appointment.
You may need to remain for a short observation period prior to your procedure, and should plan to have someone assist you home after your treatment is completed. If your anxiety presents a challenge to receiving proper dental care, call to discuss your options.
