Teeth Whitening

Whitening is one of the easiest and most visibly perceptible changes you can make to improve the appearance of your smile.

Whitening is a non-invasive and simple treatment that alters the color of your tooth enamel, turning back the clock on stains and making your smile whiter and brighter.

At-home systems are the most popular method for correcting discoloration; however, if you have pre-existing restorations, at-home kits will not change the color of those restorations. At Petaluma Family Dentistry, we offer more comprehensive in-office whitening systems. Learn more:

Reasons to Whiten Your Teeth

Dental discoloration is a common concern among our patients. There are many reasons our patients cite for choosing to whiten their teeth. Some of the most common include:

Stains from smoking, medications or diet
Discoloration due to excessive fluoride exposure during dental development (fluorosis)
Normal wear of tooth enamel

The At-Home Teeth Whitening Process

If you opt for an at-home whitening system, Petaluma Family Dentistry provides a more effective kit than those you can buy at the drugstore. The process typically consists of two appointments. At the first visit, Dr. Nadia Navid, DDS will take impressions of your teeth in order to create customized plastic whitening trays.

Once your trays have been fabricated, you will have an appointment to ensure they fit properly. Dr. Navid will illustrate the proper way to wear the trays for optimal results. Typically, this involves wearing the trays either over night or twice per day for at least two weeks.

After-Whitening Care

You may experience some sensitivity after whitening, which we can address through the use of sensitivity toothpaste.

As whitening isn’t a permanent procedure, it is important to avoid smoking, and foods that can stain your teeth. You will likely need an annual touch-up to maintain optimal results.
